The construction site was built in 1885 and the cornerstone was laid on August 1, 1886 by Bishop Gasnier, DD and Sir Frederick A. Weld, G. C M. G in an official ceremony that included witnessed by several religions and laity. It bears a resemblance to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, in France. As a national monument, it was funded by the National Monuments Fund, administered by the National Heritage Board, on 2016 for renovation.
